| Wear Red on Fridays to Support Our Troops By Ted Sampley U.S. Veteran Dispatch November 23, 2005 Lee Steward, president of the Special Forces Association, Chapter X, in Sierra Vista, Az, is asking for every "red blooded American" to join in a "sea of red" campaign to support United States servicemen and women serving in America's war against terrorism.
"I guarantee you," Steward said, if the silent majority will join us, "it will not be long before the USA will be covered in red in support of our troops much to the disdain of the un-American ralliers." The idea of wearing red as a show of solidarity is traced back to the Norwegians, who wore red caps as silent defiance of their Nazi oppressor's during WWII. After Norway, which had hoped to remain neutral, was forcibly occupied by Germany in 1940 and Norway's King Haakon VII had established a government in exile in England, the Norwegian people began organizing armed and passive resistance campaigns. In silent resistance, Norwegian women began knitting red caps for their children to wear as a symbol of defiance against the Nazis. Similarly, in Denmark, women knitted red white-and blue caps (colors of the Allies) for the very same reason. Whenever Norwegians and Danes left their homes to travel in public, it became obvious that the majority stood united in their desire for freedom. Their silent "red cap" demonstration of solidarity helped to change history. Steward's campaign is apparently gaining support. A quick search of the internet reveals hundreds of hits advocating the wearing of red on Fridays. The on-line U.S. Veteran Dispatch newspaper is supporting Steward's campaign by offering discounted red pro-veteran sweat and t-shirts at http://www.soldiersbracelet.com.
